Card declined and troubleshooting
Why a card payment might fail and the quickest ways to fix it.
Last updated June 18, 2026
Most declines come down to balance, limits, or a frozen card — and they're quick to fix.
Common reasons and fixes
| Reason | Fix |
|---|---|
| Not enough balance | Fund your card and add a small buffer for conversion. |
| Spending limit reached | Raise or reset the limit in card settings. |
| Over the transaction limit | A single charge can't exceed 10,000 dollars on a USD card or 1,000,000 naira on an NGN card. |
| Card is frozen | Unfreeze the card, then retry. |
| Wrong card details | Re-check the number, expiry, and CVV. |
| Merchant not accepting USD | Try a merchant that accepts USD online payments. |
Steps to try
- Confirm the card has enough balance.
- Check it isn't frozen and hasn't hit its limit.
- Re-enter the card number, expiry, and CVV carefully.
- Try the purchase again.
Some merchants place a temporary hold during checkout. Keep a little extra on the card so these holds don't trigger a decline.
A note on chargebacks
If a merchant disputes a payment and it becomes a chargeback, a fee applies: 45 dollars on a USD card or 500 naira on an NGN card. Paying in a currency other than USD also costs an extra 3 percent, so a purchase can come to more than the sticker price.
If it still won't go through, email support@boldswitch.ng with the date, amount, and merchant.
