Choosing your business type
Pick the structure that matches how your business is registered, from Sole Proprietor to PLC.
Last updated June 1, 2026
When you create a business, you'll choose a business type. Pick the one that matches how your business is set up.
The options
- Private Limited (Ltd) — a registered company with shares held privately.
- Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) — a partnership with limited liability for partners.
- Public Limited (PLC) — a company whose shares can be offered to the public.
- Sole Proprietor — a single owner trading in their own name.
- Partnership — two or more people running a business together.
- Cooperative — a member-owned and member-run organisation.
Which should I pick?
Choose the structure shown on your registration documents. If you're a freelancer or single-owner trader without CAC registration, Sole Proprietor is usually right and you can start at Tier 1 with just your BVN and NIN.
Tip: Your business type doesn't cap your limits on its own. Limits depend on your verification tier. See Verification tiers and limits.
