Card declined / troubleshooting
The usual reasons a card is declined and how to fix each one fast.
Last updated June 1, 2026
Most card declines come down to a handful of causes, each with a quick fix.
Common reasons a card is declined
| Reason | Fix |
|---|---|
| Spending limit reached | Raise or remove the cap in the card's Limits, or wait for the period to reset |
| Card is frozen | Open the card and tap Unfreeze |
| Not enough in the business balance | Fund the card or top up your business balance |
| Merchant restricts virtual cards | Some merchants block virtual cards. Try another card or payment method |
Find the exact reason
- Open the Cards tab and tap the card.
- Open the declined transaction in the list.
- The detail screen shows the specific reason the network returned, which points you to the right fix above.
Tip
Check the limit and the freeze toggle first. Those two account for most declines and both are fixed in a couple of taps.
For limits, see Set card spending limits. For freezing, see Freeze or unfreeze a card.
If the reason is unclear after checking these, email support@boldswitch.ng and we will investigate.
